Abstract
The glomangioma(glomus tumor) arising from the glomus apparatus most frequently occurrs in the subungual region of the fingers, in which the glomus apparatus is mainly distributed. Even in the oral cavity, the glomus apparatus is known to be
found
i the
perodontal ligament. But the incidence of glomus tumor occurred in the oral cavity is extremely rare, only 13 cases have been reported until now.
We recently exprienced a case of an intraoral glomangioma in a 47-year-old male patient, who complained of a slowly growning mass on the left side of his buccal cheek. The mass was well encapsulated and contained hemorrhagic fluid.
Histologically,
the
tumor was composed of various sized vascular channels surrounded by nests of uniform polygonal cells. the tumor cells strongly reacted to and antivimentin and anti-actin antibodies, immunohistochemically. An ultrastructureal study revealed
distinct
basal lamina with dense plaque and numerous pinocytic vesicles. We also found thin filaments with focal densities in this cases. these immunohistochemical and ultrastructural findings support that glomus cells are actually modified smooth muscle
cells.
